Pali

Pali is the Middle Indo-Aryan language of the Theravāda Buddhist canon, a literary vernacular younger than Sanskrit’s classical grammar but descended from the same Old Indo-Aryan speech, smoothed by the sound changes of everyday use: clusters assimilate (Takṣaśilā becomes Takkasilā), and the crisp edges of the older language soften. The canon it carries was composed orally in northern India from roughly the fourth century BCE and first written down in Sri Lanka in the first century BCE; the great commentaries followed in the fifth century CE. The name pāli originally meant simply “the text,” and only later came to name the language of the text; the tradition itself called the language Māgadhī, the speech of Magadha, though modern scholarship places its dialect base further west.

Pali has no script of its own. It has been written in whatever script its carriers used, Sinhala in Ceylon, Burmese, Khmer, and Thai in Southeast Asia, Devanagari and Roman in modern editions, and none of the surviving manuscripts approaches the age of the texts. This atlas renders Pali forms in Brahmi, the script of the earliest Middle Indo-Aryan writing (the Aśokan edicts, third century BCE, whose Prakrit stands close to Pali), as the nearest ancient dress the words could have worn; the rendering is an editorial convention, not a manuscript attestation, and the romanized form given with each entry is the scholarly citation form of the Pali Text Society.
