The principal language of ancient Mesopotamia from the mid-third millennium BCE through the Hellenistic period, encompassing Old Akkadian, Babylonian (with its Old, Middle, and Neo- phases), and Assyrian dialects. Akkadian served as the diplomatic lingua franca of the Late Bronze Age Near East and was written in cuneiform inherited from Sumerian.
